  Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

Center for Student Opportunity is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., but CSO’s reach is national. The organization works with colleges, counselors, schools, community programs, and students across the country.

What is a first-generation student? Underserved?

The Department of Education and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) define first-generation students as “those students whose parents have no education beyond high school.” Thus, the student is a member of the first generation in his/her immediate family to attend college. Underserved does not preclude the aforementioned category, but expands the audience to include, as defined by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), “those students whose unique circumstances and needs are not addressed adequately at educational institutions.”

It is important to note that the above definitions do not presuppose the target audience to be inner-city, minority, or poor. Center for Student Opportunity recognizes that first-generation and underserved populations exist in rural and suburban communities across the United States, as well as among families of all ethnicities and income levels. These students are equally in need of adequate college counseling and preparation, and will be a focus of CSO’s efforts as well.
